Review
Well. I finished Wheel of Time. It took about 15 months to listen to the audio books which isn’t a bad pace with a few other books sprinkled in. I really liked them. I personally didn’t have a huge issue with the middle drag. Yeah, not a ton happened but I didn’t dislike them. I’m not starting a 3 million word series for the concise writing style. The Final Books- After Jordan died Sanderson took over and did a great job. I think he not only stayed true to the style and characters but wrote some of the best books in the series. A lot happened and it was good stuff. In general I really liked books 12 and 13 which of course just set up the book-long final battle in book 14. And it worked! I felt like so many things that we seeded earlier came to pass. Every character had a role to play. The epilogue/end of the series was well done. I’m not sure if I’d agree if just told how it ended but I think that it worked well. I didn’t love every part of how the end of the last battle played out but overall it was a really satisfying end to this massive work. I also liked how the final books really dealt with the high-magic nature of the world and traveling. There is a ton of stuff that would “break” with magic being so powerful and break it does. The final book really puts the one power to a ton of clever uses that I really appreciated. Stubbornness- I think it’s interesting that the core flaw with all of the good guys is that they’re stubborn. They’re not stupid, they’re not greedy, they’re just pig-headed. Much of the series is getting each of them to stop being stubborn. Once they stop being stubborn they can actually accomplish things. I’m mostly okay with this though the stubbornness was the biggest drag of the middle books. Sometimes I’d with they’d just shut up and do what had to be done. All-in-all I really liked the series and would recommend it to anyone willing and interested in a fantasy series this long. I think that the quality does vary but in the end the payoff was worth it.
