Review
I really enjoyed this. At the core of the book are two very different people that shared the same passions. As those passions diverged things got very messy. That is where another big theme comes in, management. They were at opposite ends of the spectrum and by all accounts terrible managers but when the Johns were working together things worked. When they split apart things went downhill. Beyond that it's the story of the birth of modern 3d gaming, the birth of internet gaming and the birth of big design teams. John Romero was right when he said his big, modern game needed a big staff. He just had no idea how to manage that. I've been reading a lot of books on the history of gaming recently and this one best illustrates the move from a cottage industry to a major economic force run by big business.
