At the climax of the Eve Wars, on December 24 of the year AC 195, the armies of the World Nation and White Fang met in a ferocious battle. World Nation leader Treize Khushrenada was slain, White Fang leader Zechs Merquise disappeared, and Earth was saved from destruction by the intervention of the five Gundam pilots. Having witnessed the consequences of war and hatred, the people of Earth and the space colonies put aside their differences and together founded a new world government. Under this newly-formed Earth Sphere Unified Nation, a year has passed in peace. The government and the populace have disarmed themselves, and almost every remaining mobile suit has been destroyed. Deciding to follow suit, Gundam pilots Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, and Quatre Raberba Winner place their mighty mobile suits inside an asteroid and send them on a one-way voyage into the sun. Review
This movie is... fine. There are three types of the anime movies based on TV shows - summary, retelling, direct sequel. And this is a sequel, which kinda ruins the end of the TV show. Endless Waltz is the story about how the peace that had dawned on humanity only lasts for a year before war starts again. Then at the end of the movie peace has dawned again, but this time for real, and we're sure of it. Why are they more sure the second time having very recent evidence that peace is fragile? It's very unclear. That's one of 3 major plot holes in this movie but I won't dwell on the others. At the end of the day this is mostly fan service and mostly succeeds on that front. Our protagonists return to save humanity but this time with a bigger animation budget. Excluding one very, very bad instance of CGI the movie looks and sounds great. It suffers a little from a distinct lack of Gundams in the first half of a Gundam movie but eventually we get a big climatic fight. Much of the movie is about politics but that suffers for those politics being pretty paper-thin. It mostly boils down to people arguing over who should be in charge and if war does in fact suck or not. At the end of the day this is a fine capstone to a fine Gundam series, and seeing it on the big screen was nice, the current transfer is quite good.
