Review

On rewatching this I think my reasons for being disappointed in the film when it came out are a little clearer. And the core problem is that the other two films of the trilogy are a lot of damn fun minute to minute. And this isn't. It's easy to point to Pegg's character as the reason for this, he's just unlikable in the movie. And I think that's fair. But I think the clearer case is Nick Frost. He's one of the best parts of the first two movies because he's a fun character. But for the first hour in this movie he he's a stick in the mud. Now there are good reasons for this, but the character doesn't want to be in the film. So while I think the last third of the movie is a lot of fun, it's less fun than the climaxes of the first two films, and it's trying to bring up from a much darker first half. All that said, this is a pretty good movie, and I think its themes work well in the trilogy, it just comes as something of a letdown after the first two movies. The end of the movie is where it is at its strongest and I think that works well for the end of the trilogy. At the end of the day these movies are celebrating characters who can't grow up and won't change, and I love that.
