Review
Ugh, the three part novel originally released as a serial. I'm so glad this format has died out. That said I think the format worked better here than in others I've read. The first two parts set up the third which is the longest and is really the story the book wants to tell. Which is a good story! This is a pretty unique post-apocalyptic tale and on the whole I think it's strong. My biggest complaint is probably in part one. Part one is the setup for the rest of the book but it has a pair of problems. First it gets bogged down in characters, the purpose is just to set up parts 2/3 but it tells a story with a lot of details not needed. BUT it also just skips over big stretches and moves very quickly. So there is this awkward middle group where you feel like it's half way between skimming over everything and involving the reader with the characters. It all does really come together in part 3. I can forgive the clumsy format because part 3 really did need the setup and the result is worth it.
